St. Joseph Soldier Proud to Fight Overseas for Freedom

Devin Wallingford, a sergeant in the U.S. Army, is currently serving a nine month deployment in Afghanistan.
(ST. JOSEPH, Mo.) During a time of resentment toward America, a St. Joseph native is serving his country in Afghanistan.

Sergeant Devin Wallingford, 21, is currently serving a nine month deployment overseas in the Army.

The young sergeant graduated from Lafayette High School in 2009. Six months later, he joined the Army.

In a phone call, Wallingford mentioned he hasn't seen much of the unrest that has taken over much of the region.

He is just honored his family has nominated him as a Hometown Hero.

An honor his family is happy to share as their son fights in a war.

"He will do fine over there," said Butch Grimm. "I know he is strong and we are proud of him."

During his short military service, Wallingford has been promoted four times.
