Today is known as the Day of Commitment to Eliminate Racism.
The NAACP and the St. Joseph YWCA recognized it with their annual breakfast.
In honor of the day, LaDawndra Robbs was awarded the Kelsey Beshears Racial Justice Award.
Robbs is a social activist and social studies teacher at Central High School.
She says today is about coming together as a community.
"Racism exists and we all have to do our part to break those barriers," said Robbs. "If that means we have to get to know each other a little bit more, that means we have to get our of our comfort zones. But mostly, we have to make sure we pronounce what racism is and not ignore it."
The award was named after Kelsey Beshears - a St. Joseph woman who was very active in the struggle for racial equality.
This was the 18th year for the Eliminate Racism breakfast.
