The Bulldogs (27-2) beat Macks Creek (24-7) 55-54 Friday afternoon to earn a third place finish in Class 1 boys basketball. Their 27 wins sets a new program record for a single season. The old mark of 26 was set by the 1971 team.
Stanberry sophomore Daniel Hailey led the way posting a double-double with 18 points and 11 rebounds. He scored a total of 48 points between two games at Mizzou Arena Thursday and Friday.
The Pirates stayed close throughout much of the first half, but with the game tied 24-24 late in the second quarter, the Bulldogs received a lift through an unconventional play. Sophomore Alex McQuinn, Stanberry's leading three-point shooter, hit a jumper from behind the arc and got fouled for the rare four-point play. The Dawgs went into the break with a 28-24 lead.
Stanberry's advantage ballooned to ten points in the third quarter, but Macks Creek made a late charge. Cody Eidson scored a game-high 21 points for the Pirates, but their push came up short.
Seniors Nathan Luke and Ryan Jensen joined McQuinn with ten points in the game. Isaac Heddinger finished with seven points, four rebounds and four assists.
