SHSU athletic director Bobby Williams announced Sunday that Tjeerdsma is on a list of four finalists, all of whom will interview either Monday or Tuesday this week.
Joining Tjeerdsma is former Delaware head coach K.C. Keeler, current Virginia offensive line coach Scott Wachenheim, and Texas co-offensive coordinator/receivers coach Darrell Wyatt. Williams indicated a fifth name could also be in the mix.
Tjeerdmsa posted some impressive credentials while coaching in Maryville. He led the Bearcats to seven national championship appearances, including three wins in the title game. He posted a 183-43 overall record in 17 years at Northwest, and was 32-10 in the postseason. He stepped down as head coach after the 2010 season. After retiring from Northwest, Tjeerdsma returned to Austin College -- where he spent 10 years as head football coach before coming to Maryville -- to take on a role in fundraising for the athletic department. He returned to Maryville in 2013 to take over as Northwest's AD.
Sam Houston State reached the Division I FCS National Championship Game in 2011 and 2012 under former head coach Willie Fritz. Fritz made his way to SHSU after coaching at the University of Central Missouri for 13 seasons.
Tjeerdsma declined to comment on SHSU's search, but said coaching is "still in his blood".
