Violent Crime Down, Vehicle Thefts Up in New Crime Report

Overall, crime was down 3 percent compared to last year.
(ST. JOSEPH, Mo.) New crime numbers released by the St. Joseph Police Department show violent crime is down.

Overall, crime was down 3 percent compared to last year.

Violent crime dropped 10 percent and aggravated assault was down 6 percent.

However, police are investigating more vehicle thefts.

Compared to 2013, vehicle thefts are up 40 percent.

Police offer these tips to help prevent your car from being stolen:

- Lock your car and remove your keys
- Don't hide spare keys on the vehicle
- Park in well-lighted areas
- Call police if you see someone prowling around a parking lot
