Wathena Police Search for Thieves

Police in Wathena are on the hunt for the person responsible for breaking into a least a dozen cars.
(WATHENA, Ks.) Police in Wathena are on the hunt for the person responsible for breaking into a least a dozen cars.

Wednesday 12 cars were broken into on 9th Street and several more nearby.

Police say all the vehicles were unsecured with either unlocked doors or windows left down.

Right now, there are no leads but authorities are asking everyone to keep a lookout for anything suspicious and secure all vehicles.

"Lock your vehicles. Lock your truck boxes. Don't leave items in the open that can be seen where they can smash a window out and just reach in and grab it," said Wathena Police Chief Jason Pendleton.

City Council member and resident Gary Engeman said, "Gives you this sleepy little town atmosphere where people don't lock doors and a lot of people didn't lock cars that probably will now."

Authorities are asking anyone with any information about the break-ins to call them at 785-989-4521 or send an e-mail to policedepartment@wathenakansas.com.
