"We know that now kids are back in school and outdoor pools are closing down. We wanted to celebrate with our community," said YMCA Operations Director Suzanne King.
The YMCA recently renovated their indoor aquatic center and wanted to open it back up to the community this holiday weekend.
"There's new paint on the walls, there's new tiles on the sound tiles, and the pool's been cleaned. So the tank is a lot whiter if you will and brand new water," said King.
The Y says they didn't know what to expect when opening the pool near the end of the summer.
"When we offered this yesterday we really didn't know how many people would take advantage of this but we're just glad we have some of our community in to use our pool and see the renovations that have been done to the center," said King.
St. Joseph Resident Brandii Mitchell and her family were spending the day outside when they decided to cool off a bit.
"It was pretty hot outside so we decided to go ahead and come down to the YMCA. They have really nice facilities here, it's a family friendly environment and it's a great way to beat the heat in the pool," said St. Joseph Resident Brandii Mitchell.
And traveling for them this weekend was out of the question.
"With the gas prices and everything the way they are, it was just kind of nice to stay at home and there were so many nice things going on in St. Joseph this weekend and [we'd] rather take part in that," said Mitchell.
Families had fun keeping cool but kids had even more fun.
"It's all for youth. It's all about youth, having fun, and families having fun together," said King.
The pool will be closed on Sunday but will be open on Labor Day from 5 am to 11 am.
