A report released Thursday from the Catholic Diocese of Kansas City-St. Joseph shows a jump in reports of child abuse but decreases in two specific areas.
(KANSAS CITY, Mo.) A report released Thursday from the Catholic Diocese of Kansas City-St. Joseph shows a jump in reports of child abuse but decreases in two specific areas.

The total number of reports increased 35 percent from 79 in 2011-2012 to 107 in 2012-2013. Most of the increase came in referral reports over concerns of abuse or neglect that do not involve people who serve the Diocese.

Sexual abuse reports within the diocese dropped slightly from 20 to 17. Two of those reports were substantiated and the employees, volunteers or clerics involved were removed from Public Ministry.

The most recent report comes from the Office of Child and Youth Protection. The reporting period was between July 1, 2012 through June 30, 2013.
