Donor Responds to Need, Cold Weather Shelter to Open Early

Due to funding, the Cold Weather Shelter was still weeks away from opening. But, that changed Thursday after an anonymous donation from a KQ2 viewer.
(ST. JOSEPH, Mo.) With temperatures dropping well below freezing this week, there was a concern about how St. Joseph's homeless population would cope.

Due to funding, the Cold Weather Shelter was still weeks away from opening.

But, that changed Thursday after an anonymous donation from a KQ2 viewer.

Dave Howery, Interserv's executive director, said the donor stopped by the agency Thursday morning after seeing a story on KQ2 about the cost to operate the shelter.

The donor gave Community Missions a check for $7,000 so the shelter, My Brother's House, could open immediately.

"From that story, we received a phone call this morning from a family who wanted to make it happen today," said Howery.

My Brother's House was originally scheduled to open on Dec. 30. Now, it will open on Friday, Dec. 6.

Staff members with Community Missions are now working to secure the items needed to open ahead of schedule.

The shelter served more than 90 homeless men between January and March of this year.

Volunteers are needed to help at My Brother's House. Call 816-390-8884 to learn more about the opportunities available.
