Family Escapes Injury in St. Joseph House Fire, Cats Killed

The fire blocked traffic at 59 Highway and Alabama Street while crews worked the fire.
(ST. JOSEPH, Mo.) A family escaped injury in a house fire Wednesday morning, but several family pets did not survive.

The fire happened in the 900 block of Alabama Street around 10 a.m.

Those living in the home said they were unable to save three of their six cats from the home that was quickly filled with flames and smoke.

Officials with the St. Joseph Fire Department said the fire most likely started in a bedroom of a home, but they are still investigating the cause.

St. Joseph police warned drivers to avoid the area of U.S. 59 Highway and Alabama streets while fire crews worked in the area.
