Fatal Car Crash Victim's Family Files Wrongful Death Lawsuit

The family of a St. Joseph woman, killed in a 2012 crash, has filed a wrongful death lawsuit against the other driver involved in the crash.
(ST. JOSEPH, Mo.) The family of a St. Joseph woman, killed in a 2012 crash, has filed a wrongful death lawsuit against the other driver involved in the crash.

JoEllen Abbott was killed in the crash at 11th Street and 22nd Street in November 2012. Three of her children and her two parents are named as plaintiffs in the lawsuit. The family is seeking more than $25,000 for costs and expenses and to, "punish and deter," the defendants and others for similar conduct.

The other driver was charged as a juvenile for involuntary manslaughter and tampering with a vehicle. The driver, who was 16 years old at the time was driving a stolen pickup at a high rate of speed when he failed to stop at a stop sign and hit a mini-van, killing Abbott.

Another teenager in the truck was also charged with tampering with a vehicle.
