Final Blast Completes Demolition of Old Amelia Earhart Bridge

The final blast removed the center pier that leveled the old bridge across the Missouri River.
(ST. JOSEPH, Mo.) A final blast brought down the rest of the Old Amelia Earhart Bridge Monday morning.

That explosion marked the last of three needed to demolish the bridge.

The old two-lane bridge is now just a memory on Atchison's skyline, replaced by the new four-lane bridge.

The final blast removed the center pier that leveled the old bridge across the Missouri River.

"I think most people are generally happy to see the bridge replaced, some miss the historical bridge," said Atchison resident John Bishop.

Crews have 24 hours to remove all the debris from the Missouri River navigation channel, using help from a crane located on a barge.
