(ATCHISON, Ks.) An unusual find shocked fishermen at a northeast Kansas lake over the weekend.

While they were fishing at Atchison County Lake, they spotted what they thought to be an alligator.

The Atchison County Sheriff's Department was notified about the discovery.

According to KAIR, deputies worked with the Humane Society to rescue the alligator using a dog kennel and other tools.

Authorities believe the alligator was someone's pet at one time. They believe it was released when it grew too large.

The Humane Society is turning over the alligator to exotic animal experts in Lee's Summit, Mo.
