(CLARINDA, Ia.) A close road loss Sunday night was punctuated with four Mustangs getting ejected.
Clarinda beat St. Joseph 5-3, with four of the A's runs coming after a wild sixth inning.
Jordan Guida, who's had a hot bat lately with a .341 batting average including two home runs off Clarinda pitching last Wednesday, was hit in the helmet with the first pitch he saw in the sixth inning.
Guida was able to stay in the game and take his base after getting beaned.
When the next batter, Tanner Lubach, hit into a double play to end the inning, Guida tried to break up the play sliding into the second. The base umpire ejected him for going in too aggressively.
Manager Matt Johnson says it was a "legal slide" by Guida, and the coach also got tossed when he went out to defend his player. Bullpen coach Jayson Huett was also tossed from the game pleading Guida's case.
Patrick Burkhart was ejected in the eighth inning still defending Guida to round out the Mustangs ejections for the night.
Guida was quoted in the St. Joseph Mustangs post game press release saying, "I always want to play the game hard. That will never change. I shouldn't have been punished for playing hard."
The A's came out in the bottom of the seventh inning and plated four runs, three on a bases-clearing double by Jarvis Smith, to take a three run lead.
The Mustangs cut the deficit to two runs after Jake Kretzer's RBI single scoring Mark Robinette in the top of the eighth inning.
Johnson said after the game that he expects Sunday's events in Clarinda to "light a fire" under his squad as the teammates stepped up to defend each other during the turmoil.
St. Joseph will try to rebound Monday night in Omaha.
Pitcher Bubba Blau took the loss giving up five earned runs in six and a third innings. Blau walked five batters while striking out just two.
Kyle Simpson and Kris Koerper also contributed a RBI in the game, while Maxime Lefevre led the Mustangs going 3-4 with a run scored. Robinette went 2-4 with two runs scored.
The Mustangs are in the middle of a three game road trip that will conclude in Sedalia on Tuesday.
