Gator Found in Joplin Pothole

Gator Found in Joplin Pothole

A 2-foot alligator was found hiding in a pothole in an alley behind a home in Joplin this week.
(ST. JOSEPH, Mo.) It wouldn't seem like people in Missouri and Kansas need information on how to handle an alligator spotting. But two loose gators this month have wildlife officials weighing in.

A 2-foot alligator was found hiding in a pothole in an alley behind a home in Joplin this week.

Humane Society officials say it was likely a pet that had been released, because it was getting too big to handle. The Humane Society is now caring for the gator.

Two weeks ago, another alligator was found in a northeast Kansas lake.

Wildlife experts say small, exotic pets on the loose can cause big problems. They want to see people keep the animals where they belong.

The Atchison County gator is now at a Missouri animal sanctuary.

Officials say if you happen to stumble on an exotic pet, it's best to leave it alone and call 911.
