Giant Puffball Mushrooms Found in Local Park

If you're a fan of mushrooms, some local hunters say there are some big ones out there this time of year.
(ST. JOSEPH, Mo.) If you're a fan of mushrooms, some local hunters say there are some big ones out there this time of year.

Don't be surprised if you see one of these massive mushrooms along the parkway in St. Joseph, it's called a Giant Puffball.

Usually they're the size of a grapefruit, but a retired Missouri Western Professor and another man in St. Joseph have found several much larger than that recently.

One was more than a foot tall. Crumley says they are edible when they're young, but you have to do your homework.

"Now, these are not. Now there are some puffballs that you don't want to eat, they kind of look like this, but if you cut it them open and if they have purple in the inside, you don't want to eat those. They're nasty," said Dr. Crumley.

Dr. Crumley says they're very common in Missouri, and throughout the Midwest. He plans on taking this one home, cutting it open, and eating it
