Griffons Erupt in Third Quarter, Hammer Fort Hays

No. 6 Missouri Western moves to 4-0 with a 52-21 victory on Hall of Fame Weekend.
(ST. JOSEPH) Head coach Jerry Partridge said his team was shaky in the second half last week against Nebraska-Kearney, and it spilled over into the first half this week against Fort Hays State.

The sixth-ranked Griffons picked back up in the third quarter Saturday, scoring four times in the frame on the way to a 52-21 victory over the Tigers at Spratt Stadium.

With new Griffon Hall of Famers and future inductees on the sideline, Missouri Western ran their record to 4-0 with their third MIAA victory.

The Tigers (0-4, 0-4) struck on their first series as Treveon Albert connected with Edward Smith for a six-yard touchdown pass.

The lead was short-lived as Dom Thomas took the ensuing kickoff 96 yards to the end zone for the first of his two scores.

Thomas was part of a balanced running attack as he, Raphael Spencer, and Dalton Krysa all picked up scores on the ground. In all, MWSU racked up 254 yards on the ground while quarterback Travis Partridge rushed a season-low two times.

The senior went 13 for 22 through the air for 152 yards, two scores and an interception.

His first touchdown through the air went to Stephon Weaver to put the Griffons up 14-7 to start the second quarter. They jumped up 21-7 before Albert tossed his second score with eight seconds to go in the first half to make it a one-score game at the break.

Out of the locker room, the Griffons found the end zone three times in 75 seconds and entered the final quarter with a 49-21 advantage.

John Schmiemeier added a 39-yard field goal early in the fourth.
