They are performers and competitors and they are taking on some of the toughest groups in the region.

The Midwest Storm Cheerleaders have been together since 2008. During that time, the Savannah-based gym has traveled to dozens of competitions. They average about 8 each year.

Recently, at a state competition in Sedalia, the group brought home 10 trophies including two grand champion prizes. Their achievements prove they are top contenders.

"We were kind of overwhelmed at the beginning, being a small gym from a smaller area. The girls have really stepped up to the plate in being able to compete against some big gyms from bigger cities," said Tara Embrey, head coach.

Midwest Storm includes kids from throughout northwest Missouri. The team has some who are as young as three years old. The oldest members are in high school.

"I think it's a great opportunity for kids to have a combination of gymnastics, cheerleading and dance," added Embrey.

Midwest Storm focuses on dance and performance skills, but the crew is also serious about bringing home the hardware.

"We don't do any games or anything like that. It's for the performance and competition," said Embrey.

Midwest Storm Cheerleading is located on Highway 71 just south of Savannah.
