Smoke-Free St. Joe has submitted a petition to City Clerk Paula Heyde that calls for a ban on smoking in, "all enclosed public places withing the City of St. Joseph." The proposed ordinance does allow for exceptions such as casino gaming floors, 10 percent of hotel rooms and membership clubs that have no employees present.
The petition still has a long road before appearing on a ballot before St. Joseph voters. The petition must first be certified. Certification will require 2,190 valid signatures. The City Council then has 60 days to consider the ordinance. The council will have the option of passing the ordinance as written or submitting it to voters.
