Heartland Welcomes First Baby Born in 2014

A Savannah couple welcomed a newborn baby girl in the early hours of Wednesday, becoming the first baby born in the new year.
(ST. JOSEPH, Mo.) Just three short hours into 2014, as people around the country welcomed the new year, Samantha Estes was in labor.

"I was pretty glad she came on the first," she said.

At six pounds and five ounces, Brooklyn Grace Estes became one of the first babies born in 2014, and the first at Heartland in St. Joseph.

"I really didn't even know what day it was," Samantha said.

Brooklyn was born more than a week early, meaning the unique birth date was a true surprise.

"It's amazing. I love it," dad Cody Estes said. "I've been waiting awhile."

Brooklyn waited just long enough.

The couple's friends also went into labor on Tuesday night at the same hospital.

"I kept telling her we were kind of racing," Samantha said.

Their friends beat them to it.

They delivered a baby just nine minutes to midnight, meaning the Estes family became the only people in the hospital waiting to deliver.

"They were kind of rubbing it in that they got the tax write off," Cody said laughing.

While the Estes family will not receive the tax write off, they did get a gift basket from the hospital.

"We're happy either way," Cody said.

Cody and Samantha are just happy to have a healthy baby girl.
They said when Brooklyn is old enough, they'll have a very cool story to tell.
