High School Students Honored for Volunteer Work in St. Joseph

The group recognized students from Benton, Central, Lafayette, LeBlond and St. Joseph Christian.
(ST. JOSEPH, Mo.) High school is known for socializing and after-school activities, but some St. Joseph students are also using this time to volunteer.

The Optimist Club of St. Joseph has taken notice. The group took time Thursday to thank them for their community service during a luncheon.

The group recognized students from Benton, Central, Lafayette, LeBlond and St. Joseph Christian.

"It was amazing how many activities these youth are involved in and the many areas that they are helping others in," said Lisa Little, Optimist Club of St. Joseph.

School counselors and principals nominated students for dedicating many hours to volunteering.

"It's so rewarding," said Lauryn Schmitz, St. Joseph Christian. "Even though you are giving a lot of your time for someone else, it ends up being such a blessing to you just to see the smiles on people's faces."

The students honored Wednesday received a certificate and a gift card for their volunteer work in the community.
