(KANSAS CITY, Kan.) Missouri Western pounded Missouri Southern in the first game of the MIAA Baseball Tournament Championship 12-2 to force a decisive game two.
The Griffons scored nine runs in the third inning to take an eight-run lead, and never looked back.
Missouri Western (40-9) pounded out eight hits --seven singles and one double-- and were aided by two Southern errors in the third frame.
They tacked on two more in the fourth and one in the sixth to open up a double-digit lead, and use the ten-run rule to end the game two innings early.
Lathrop native Kyle Kelly got spot start and gave the Griffs what they needed.
Kelly allowed two earned runs on seven hits in seven innings and struck out four. It was just his second start of the season, but his record is 3-1.
Game two of the MIAA Tournament Championship started at 1:30pm Saturday.
