Local Rock Band Gets Chance at Fame

A local band has a chance at fame. Scruffy and the Janitors is a finalist in Kansas City's Deli Magazine's 'Emerging Artist of the Year.' Now, they need your votes to make their dream come true.
(ST. JOSEPH, Mo.) If you hear the name 'Scruffy and the Janitors' you probably don't picture two brothers, and a best friend, jamming on their instruments.

Well, that's exactly who these guys are.

This St. Joseph alternative rock band has only been a group for a few years.

But, they already have a shot at taking a major leap into the music industry.

The band is a finalist for Kansas City's Deli Magazine's 'Emerging Artist of the Year.'

"Just a good milestone. It's great to get our name out no matter where it's at," Steven Foster.

This three-member band has played locally, and as far as St. Louis, but the journey to that point hasn't been easy.

"It's really hard to go down to St. Louis and play shows because we get denied a lot because nobody knows who we are. I think being on the magazine, while we're down there in Austin [Texas], will get people an idea of who we are just to check us out," said Trevin Newton.

The band is up against nearly 50 other groups.

While winning the contest is a big deal to them, it means even more to their number one fans, their parents.

"For them to get this cover, that means publishers, promoters, labels, they're all going to see that magazine," said Tom Newton.

"They want the success just as much as we do. So, it's really nice. I think it's really helped us. I think it's really been a big push," said Teriq Newton.

With support from their parents, each other, and the community, these musicians are hoping to get their big break.

The voting ends on Monday, Jan. 20.

If they win, they will make the cover of Kansas City's Deli Magazine.
