Man Gives Life-Saving Gift

A St. Joseph man and his father have recovered after son donates kidney to dad.
(ST.JOSEPH, Mo.) "About two years ago he kind of kept it from everybody in the family knowing how bad it was," says Brandon Furlong.

He says he has much to be thankful for this holiday season.

Three months ago Brandon gave his dad, Bill, a kidney.

"My mom and dad were on a partnered list for about a year and they hadn't had any success with that so I thought I'd like to try," Brandon said.

He was a match but struggled convincing his dad to accept it.

"It was hard for him to come to terms with accepting it and I really wanted to do it. I was excited we were a match and I was happy to do it," said Furlong.

For years, his father suffered from high blood pressure but never knew how bad it was.

"I think his blood pressure had been so high for so long that it caused his kidneys to fail," Brandon added.

In September, the family traveled  to the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota for the transplant surgery.

He says his faith along with his family got him through it.

His children even shared jokes with him about the operation.

"Somebody had asked him where's your dad and he was like, oh, he's giving my granddad some of his organs. My ten year old asked why doesn't granddad just get one on the Black Market,"says Furlong.

His most intimate moments were with his father.

"We got to talk while we were on the table and we got to say what we wanted to say to each other," he said.

Three months later, Brandon and his father have recovered from surgery and even spent Christmas together.

"I've always had a great relationship with my dad, he's always been my rock and he's always been somebody I look up to. He's my hero and he's been who I model my life after and so it's brought us closer and I'm truly Blessed to have such a great family and such a great father," added Furlong.
