Independence police say officer James Lockard was knocked off his ATV by a falling tree Saturday.
(GENTRY COUNTY, Mo.) An Independence, Missouri police officer was killed in a hunting accident in Gentry County Sunday.

Independence police say officer James Lockard was knocked off his ATV by a falling tree Saturday.

He was air lifted to Heartland Hospital but died the next day.

Lockard was an officer with the Independence Police Department since July 2008.

He served in the Patrol Division and the Special Response Team.

He is survived by a wife, son and step-son.

A fund has been set up to help the family.
