Mount Mora Cemetery Receives Grant to Repair Damaged Headstones

Mount Mora Cemetery received a $500 grant from the Missouri State Questers Westward Gateway chapter. The money helped cover the cost of resetting and repairing several headstones.
(ST. JOSEPH, Mo.) One of st. Joseph's most historic cemeteries got a boost recently to repair damaged headstones.

Mount Mora Cemetery received a $500 grant from the Missouri State Questers Westward Gateway chapter.

The money helped cover the cost of resetting and repairing several headstones.

The ground where the stones were placed has eroded over the years, causing some of them to fall.

Cemetery historian, Suzanne Lehr, said Mount Mora depends a lot on volunteers to keep the cemetery in good shape.

"Old cemeteries all struggle with the same problem - they run out of money. And, they don't have the money to do everything. So, we become dependent on volunteers and grants. So, we're grateful Missouri State Questers gave us this grant," she said.

Lehr said one of the headstones repaired belongs to the parents of former Missouri Governor Silas Wilson's wife.
