Murder Suspect Pleads Guilty to Involuntary Manslaughter

One of the men charged with the beating death of a Northwest Missouri State student in 2012, pleaded guilty to a lesser charge Tuesday.
(MARYVILLE, Mo.) One of the men charged with the beating death of a Northwest Missouri State student in 2012, pleaded guilty to a lesser charge Tuesday.

Kevin D. Mooney, 32, of Bethany, pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter in Nodaway County Court. Mooney was charged with second degree murder in the death of 21-year-old Tomarken Smith, of St. Louis.

Smith was a senior at Northwest when he was assaulted outside a bar in Maryville on Sept. 14, 2012.

Tony Overlin, 24, also of Bethany, is charged with second degree murder and first degree assault in Smith's death. Overlin has a plea hearing scheduled for Wednesday afternoon in Buchanan County Court.

Mooney's sentencing is scheduled for Sept. 30.
