(ST. JOSEPH, Mo.) The US Military All-Stars started Wednesday night's festivities at Phil Welch Stadium, but the Mustangs ended them with a 6-3 win for the third consecutive year over the all-stars.
St. Joseph received seven strong innings from starting pitcher Jerad Hawkins in the exhibition. The all-stars only scored three earned runs on six hits off Hawkins, while striking out three times. Hawkins lowered his season ERA to 3.77 in the contest.
Zac Johnson drove in the first run of the game on a fielders' choice that brought Griff Gordon across the plate.
The Mustangs brought four more around in the third, highlighted by RBI singles from Joe Koerper and Connor Foreman.
Only three of St. Joe's runs were earned as the all-stars committed three errors in the game.
The Mustangs had a scary moment in the first inning. Center fielder Emilio Villanueva was hit by a pitch leading off the bottom of the first. He left the game after the second inning with a collapsed lung.
Villanueva was taken to the hospital by ambulance. He had a tube put in to relieve pressure.
St. Joseph returns to the diamond Thursday for a MINK League contest against the Sedalia Bombers.
