New IRS Rules Allow Married Gay Couples to File Joint Tax Returns

New rules will allow married same-sex couple to file joint federal tax returns.
(WASHINGTON) New rules will allow married same-sex couple to file joint federal tax returns.

The Treasury Department's decision comes after the Supreme Court's ruling in June that struck down a section of the 1996 Defense of Marriage Act.

Treasury secretary Jacob Lew said the new rules will provide more clear guidance for same-sex couples when filing their federal taxes.

The new rules will even allow couples to file jointly, even if they have moved to a state that doesn't allow same-sex marriage.
