(MARYVILLE, Mo.) Northwest Missouri State men's tennis is back in the NCAA Tournament's round of 16 for the first time in six years.
The No. 22 Bearcats beat the Washburn Ichabods 5-1 on Saturday at the Frank Grube Courts to advance beyond the Central Region.
Northwest (20-3) won two of the three doubles matches to take a 2-1 advantage over the Ichabods.
First team All-MIAA selection Alvaro Riveros needed just two sets to pick up the Bearcats first singles win.
Senior Rafael Bugiga pulled off a 6-4 win in his second set to pull Northwest within one singles victory of winning the match.
Luis Altimires finished off the Ichabods with a 6-2 win in the second set to send the Bearcats into the next round.
The win is Northwest's second over Washburn in 2013.
The Bearcats will travel to Surprise, Az. for the round of 16.
Their next match will be May 8th at 9am against Queens (N.Y.) (11-5) or the District of Columbia (11-4).
