Northwest Gets First Win Under Michael Smith

26 unanswered points help the Bearcats topple Kansas Wesleyan for their first win.
(MARYVILLE, Mo.) A late first-half surge helped Northwest Women's Basketball cruise to an 88-55 win over Kansas Wesleyan on Friday, earning the first victory for head coach Michael Smith with the Bearcats.

Ariel Easton fueled the Northwest's effort with another potent night from the floor, shooting 12-for-16 for a game-high 23 points. Ashleigh Nelson added 15 points on a 5-for-10 performance.

Monique Stevens, Tember Schechinger, and Annie Mathews all finished in double figures as well. Mathews registered a double double with 10 rebounds to go along with 11 points.

Trailing by five midway through the first half, Easton's layup gave Northwest (1-3) a permanent lead with just under six minutes left in the half. Northwest closed out those final minutes with 21 unanswered points. Another 5-0 run out of the locker room turned a 26-23 deficit into a 49-26 Bearcat lead in under eight minutes.

The Bearcats open MIAA play on Sunday at Pittsburg State.
