(EMPORIA, Kan.) At the end of their hottest offensive week of the season, Northwest salvaged a split in their doubleheader with Emporia State, scoring a 5-1 win before being edged in game two 6-5.
Steven Garber and JJ Baccari accounted for the Bearcats' (14-24, 11-21) only RBI in the first game as Brandon Huske also crossed the plate twice on passed balls.
Ryker Fox (4-4) got the win for Northwest, fanning five batters and allowing just one earned run in five innings.
Eric Swain opened the scoring the Bearcats in the second game with his third home run in two days. The Hornets (23-15, 21-12) struck back with two of the four runs given up by Northwest hurler Marcus Garrett. He lasted the first 6 2/3 innings, but Austin Warren (1-6) went on to take the loss.
Emporia State's Eric Dawson slapped a walk-off single in the 10th inning, scoring Blake Sturgeon for the win.
Swain finished with three RBI for Northwest, while Garber and Tyler Durant added one apiece.
The Bearcats and Hornets wrap up the series with a 12 p.m. first pitch Sunday.
