The university's Board of Regents approved a resolution Monday to build a new $1.6 million University Police Department.
The new facility will also house the Purchasing Department.
Both departments are currently in a 40 year old building on the edge of campus.
The university says the building was meant to be a temporary home and is now outdated for the needs of the department.
Officials say the new facility will be centrally located and help police cut down on response times.
Construction on the new building is expected to be complete in June 2014.
