Police Arrest Fugitive After Search Near School

Coleman Elementary was under a lockdown while police searched a nearby wooded area for a fugitive described as armed and dangerous.
(ST. JOSEPH, Mo.) A St. Joseph school is placed on lockdown as police look for a wanted felon.

It started Tuesday afternoon around 3 p.m., when bounty hunters tried to take a man into custody on felony warrants from the Brittany Village apartment complex on North 36th St.

However, the fugitive got away and ran into a wooded area west of the complex.

The bounty hunters called police to assist in the search of the area, which also bordered Coleman Elementary.

The subject was described as armed and dangerous, so the school went into lockdown.

"It was a wooded area and we lost sight of him at some point," said Sgt. Todd Der with the St. Joseph Police Department. "We called the police K-9 from the Sheriff's Department. We were able to apprehend him.

The school was in lockdown for about a half-hour while the search was underway outside.

The suspect was taken into custody peacefully. No weapon was found.

The identity of the suspect and what he was wanted for is not being released at this time.
