Post Office Busy as Customers Mail Holiday Items

(ST. JOSEPH, Mo.) As people hurry to ship their gifts for Christmas, the Postal Service works seven days a week to keep up with the demand.

December 16th is the busiest day of the year for the Post Office, including all locations in St. Joseph.

"This is normally the busiest week for the post office," St. Joseph Postmaster Tara Jarrett said.

Jarrett has only been on the job for a few weeks, but has taken over during the busiest time of year.

"We are actually working seven days a week, the clerks are, just to assist us with Monday delivery,' Jarrett said.

The Kansas City service plant will process almost four million packages at the start of the week. That is double the usual amount.

Lines were long throughout the entire day as people scrambled to get their gifts shipped on time.

"I'm a little late, last minute," Becky Steele said as she stood in line.

Steele was shipping Christmas cards to her niece and nephew.

The Postal Service said the last deadline to get items shipped before Christmas is December 23rd.

The best bet however, do it soon, and expect to wait in a line.
