The "dear" season at St. Gregory's in Maryville stands for Drop Everything And Read. The program is aimed at getting students to learn to enjoy reading.
On Monday, Principal Susan Martin made good on a challenge she made to the students, promising to sit in a tree stand outside the school if they read for 6,000 minutes.
"As the week progressed and we knew how many minutes we were reading, it just motivated them even more. In fact, one of my students came in I think on Thursday morning and he just said, 'you know this is fun, and this make reading really fun' and that is ultimately our goal," said Marcy Sobotka, 4th grade teacher.
Members of the Northwest Missouri State University football team also stopped by the school to read to students on Monday.
