Prosecutor: No Charges for Man Who Drowned Cat in Lake

The Platte County prosecutor says the man admitted to drowning the cat in a pet carrier at Lake Waukomis earlier this month.
(PLATTE COUNTY, Mo.) A northwest Missouri prosecutor says he can't charge a man who drowned his cat because he didn't commit a crime.

The Platte County prosecutor says the man admitted to drowning the cat in a pet carrier at Lake Waukomis earlier this month.

He told police he drowned the cat after it bit and scratched a family member.

Prosecutor Eric Zahnd says it is against Missouri's animal abuse law to kill an animal in a way that causes suffering.

However, that law does not apply to an animal killed by its owner.
