Search Continues for Missing Atchison Man

A northeast Kansas family is still waiting to hear from the missing 70-year-old man.
(ST. JOSEPH Mo.) Larry Sandy has one goal right now and that's finding his brother.

"He went to Walmart to work on the 28th. He disappeared and never checked back in with them or anything after he checked out that day," said Sandy of his brother Garry Sandy.

Garry Sandy, 70, of Atchison, Kansas was reported missing Dec. 29. His family says they have no idea where he could be but they want him home safe.

"It's very important to know that he's okay for the whole family. I know closure one way or the other would be good for everybody," added Larry Sandy.

They're worried since he's diabetic and has a heart condition.

Garry Sandy is one of several seniors to go missing in the area in recent years. While every case is different, there is help to keep track of seniors, especially those with health problems. The Buchanan County Sheriff's Department has a tracking device called Care Trak that is used for elderly with memory loss. Their hope is to find missing seniors within thirty minutes of using the device.

The sheriff's department has been using Care Trak for a couple years.

It's a device Sandy wishes his brother had even though he doesn't suffer from memory loss.

"It might have been very important in this case and everybody would have known what's going on," he said.

The county currently has fifteen tracking devices. Authorities say Care Trak has been used numerous times to rescue both elderly and children with disabilities.

"One reason why I care so much about this program and we try and get it into the community is that you can not put a dollar amount on anybody's life and the community is lucky enough to have a program like this," says Deputy Amanda Chen with the Buchanan County Sheriff's Department.

Without this kind of device, the Sandy family says they'll continue searching for their missing brother.

"Let them know and us know just so everybody can have an ease of mind that he's out there somewhere because we would definitely love to hear that," added Larry Sandy.

If you'd like more information about Care Trak you can reach the Buchanan County Sheriff's Department at (816) 236-8864.

If you have information or know the whereabouts about Garry Sandy, you're asked to call Atchison Police at (913) 367-4323.
