(CLARKSDALE, Mo.) A St. Joseph man is charged with multiple felonies after allegedly assaulting a woman and a man who tried to help the woman in Clarksdale earlier this week.

Harvey Smith, 36, is charged with first-degree assault, armed criminal action, kidnapping and second-degree domestic assault.

According to a probable cause statement, the DeKalb County Sheriff's Office was called to 107 N. 3rd in Clarksdale Tuesday night for a man being beaten by another man who was coming down off of drugs.

The court document alleges Smith held a woman hostage in a Clarksdale apartment for eight hours. The victim told deputies Smith also assaulted the woman who had marks on and around her neck.

A man in the area told deputies he saw Smith hitting the woman, who was pinned against a propane tank. The witness told his friend about the incident and the friend confronted Smith and tackled him. Smith then allegedly hit the man in the face with a, "brick-like object" four times.

The man was taken to Heartland hospital with injuries from the beating.

Smith is also accused of violating a protection order.

He is being held in the Daviess/DeKalb Regional jail. His bond is set at $100,000. No court appearances have been scheduled.
