Odileidys Carballo won an online contest that landed her a minivan for her family.
"On Mother's Day, she saw an advertisement on TV for a sweepstakes through Charmin for mother bear. She said 'well I'm a mother bear' so she got online and she signed up on Facebook," said Carballo's interpreter.
Carballo doesn't speak English, and she's been living in the United States for less than a year.
She moved to St. Joseph from Cuba with her husband and their 2-year-old son 7 months ago.
Before Thursday, the family didn't own a car.
"She was looking for a car and this is a huge deal for her, when she found out she cried and she was very very happy," said the interpreter.
Happy, but hesitant, Carballo was anxiously waiting to claim her prize.
"She didn't believe it, she didn't believe it, but now the day has finally come and she believes it now," said the interpreter.
Carballo says life as a mama bear will be much easier now that she's driving around with a new Chrysler Town and Country mini van and she's thankful for the organizations that made it happen.
"She's very emotional right now but she just wants to thank from the bottom of her heart Charmin, and Car City for championing this and being so courteous," said the interpreter.
The sweepstakes began on Mother's Day and ran through the end of June.
