Dee Anna Kelley is a counselor at the Colgan Alternative Resource Center, a school with programs for at risk students.
She has been selected as a semi-finalist for the Counselor of the Year award from the American School Counselor Association.
Kelley didn't make the finals, but she is still considered in the top ten in her profession nationwide.
She says she was in disbelief just to make it as far as she did, and she says there's a lot that goes into being a good school counselor.
"What makes a good counselor is someone who can see the entire picture of issues, not just see the kid's view or the parent's view, or the school view. You have to take in all of those perspectives and make the best decision you can that's best for kids," Kelley said.
Even though she didn't win the top prize, Kelley is planning on attending a gala in Washington, D.C., where she will be honored in front of other nominees and educators.
