St. Joseph United Way Warning of Potential Scam

The United Way of Greater St. Joseph is warning the community that its main phone number may be involved in a caller id spoofing scam.
(ST. JOSEPH, Mo.) The United Way of Greater St. Joseph is warning the community that its main phone number may be involved in a caller id spoofing scam.

According to the United Way, a donor received a phone call from the organization's number, 816-364-2381. A voice mail message thanked the donor for his contribution and stated he would be billed through his cell phone provider.

After speaking with the St. Joseph Police Department it was determined the organization's phone number has been involved in a scam.

The United Way wants to remind the community that it does make phone calls to donors but, no personal information, beyond billing or email addresses are requested over the phone. United Way staff may ask for pledges over the phone, but never ask for payment over the phone.

If anyone believes they have been targeted by the scam, they are asked to contact St. Joseph police at 816-271-4777.
