Students Market and Grow Poinsettias in St. Joe

Agriculture students at Hillyard Technical Center in St. Joseph are growing Poinsettias this Holiday season to sell as part of a project.
(ST. JOSEPH, Mo.) Agriculture students at Hillyard Technical Center in St. Joseph are growing Poinsettias this Holiday season to sell as part of a project.

The students are in high schools throughout the district and attend Hillyard for technical training in greenhouse management and landscape design.

"I just like gardening," Central High Senior Trysta Schultz said.

"One of their projects is to raise a marketable crop and sell it to a customer," Instructor Lindy Holt said.

The class started growing the Poinsettias in September and have been selling them to the public in recent weeks.

"Everyone wants a Poinsettia," Holt said. "There is a demand and we are providing the supply."

The students learn marketing skills and technical skills with growing the plants.

"They're pretty easy to grow," Schultz said. "You just have to make sure you don't over water them."

The class will be selling the plants through Christmas.

You can purchase one by contacting the school at 816-671-4170. The plants are $10.

The class will be growing and selling other types of plants and flowers in the Spring.
