Voters Pass Public Safety Tax

Voters approved the public safety tax with 56% of the vote
(ST. JOSEPH, Mo.) A tax passes at the polls Tuesday night that will help pay to beef up St. Joseph's police force.

Voters approved the public safety tax with 56% of the vote.

The half cent sales tax is expected to raise around $5 million a year.

The money will go toward hiring 20 new police officers.

It will also help pay for new public safety equipment and bring fire and health department salaries up to comparable wages.

Voter turnout was light for Tuesday's vote.

Around 18% of registered voters turned out at the polls.
