With Heartland Ending Ambulance Service, Elwood Also Concerned

Come July 1, 2014, Elwood, like St. Joseph, will need other option for ambulance service.

(ELWOOD, Kan.) Just like in St. Joseph, in Elwood, they're worried about the future and cost of ambulance service.

Heartland Hospital's announcement they would discontinue providing emergency response in Buchanan County next July 1st also overlaps into Elwood.

Leaders there say they have not been allowed to be a part of an ambulance committee looking to future options.

"Right now, everything hinges on what St. Joe and what Buchanan County does with the ambulance company over there," said Elwood Fire Chief Alvin Wood. "When Heartland made that announcement, everybody knew we had a problem."

Elwood leaders are also looking at the possibility of soliciting service from the Troy Ambulance District.
