The YMCA broke ground Wednesday afternoon on a nearly $4 million community campus in the north end.
The 20-thousand-square-foot facility is part of a 34-acre development that includes a new city park, a gym and other amenities.
Wednesday's groundbreaking ceremony comes after months of fundraising and more than 7 years after discussions first began on the project.
"These folks who have no place to take their grandchildren to play on any kind of play ground equipment. There's nothing like that that exists on the northeast side of St. Joe. It's really about time," said Executive Director Mark Cartledge.
Construction is set to begin in sometime this fall on the new YMCA near the shoppes at North Village.
The project is set for completion in august of 2014.
